The Extraordinary Ordinary:Craft Brightens the Everyday World
"Should one be afraid of the world of the ordinary?
Would not the craft era of the highest level be a period in which the great become
normal?”
I thought of the word 'ordinary' countless times while preparing the current exhibition,
The extraordinary ordinary: Craft brightens the everyday world.
When
encountering this word, implying the meaning of 'ordinary, being normal without any
different aspects,' it sometimes approaches as a negative sensibility.
It is
probably because of the meaning of not being special.
While no one actually looks for ordinary things while appreciating artworks, we retraced
the word 'ordinary'
while thinking of crafts' greatest characteristics of 'labor,' 'multiplicity,' and 'use'
through this exhibition.
Craft artists sufficiently savor their materials of choice as they consistently
work.
They make implements while considering the use, and they add efforts to create better
works.
They produce in great quantity, and they also create objects of no insufficiencies as
the artists' skills fall into place.
This is how they differ from contemporary artists, who strive for that one
masterpiece.
As such, the 'ordinariness' crafts create imply more than the meaning of the word we
commonly use.
Held in it are labor, effort, time, contemplation, and consideration for the user.
To
display the meaning of crafts' 'ordinariness' in depth,
we composed the exhibition in the three parts of Part 1: The Most Tranquil
Movement,
Part 2: Familiar Objects, and Part 3: The Landscape of Craft, with 20
craft artists actively
presenting
their work in Korea and abroad.
Crafts, which have 'utility,' are finally completed when the user's eyes and hands reach
them.
Perhaps it is when 'enjoyment' expands in search of new uses that an unpredictable new
world unfolds.
We hope the creator, viewer, and user will recognize one another and find uses fitting
their respective tastes, thus taking the first step toward a 'world of the extraordinary
ordinary' in which craft
artists' works become 'beneficial usual things' in daily life.
It is a space displaying long-accumulated traces of artists’ silent efforts and
contemplation, and we seek to present works completed through concentrating over
extensive time by six artists working in sole reliance on materials and their
fingertips.
We focus on the artist’s actions in The Most Tranquil Movement; beginning
with Inchin Lee’s ceramic works titled Piling and Stacking, which alludes to the
process and act of making art, one can admire works by Soungchuel Park, who
added convenient utility to beauty by lacquering on metal vessels created by
pounding the material thousands of times, and Jinhwi Lee, who creates
delicately shiny ceramics through the process of fragmenting and reconnecting
glaze, and glass works by Otsuki Yosuke, which seem to hold fresh air.
Together with this, we would like you to feel the vitality felt in silent works
from Haiying Hu’s flat ceramics delivering the sensation of admiring distant
scenery through pointillist landscape painting of blue and white pigment to
Jounghye Yoo’s large installation pieces in which the artist dyes Korean paper
with natural dye to create spaces where the moonlight seems to flow.
Jinhwi Lee presents nature’s rich colors through the experimental technique of
piecing together fragmented glaze like a puzzle. The ceramic surfaces provide the
sensation of viewing river water sparkling in the sunlight, and this is an
expression in which the geographic, internal, and social environments Lee
experienced are recomposed through expressions of glaze that have gone through
fortuity.
Inchin Lee creates unglazed ceramics fired in a firewood kiln. Clay meets fire in a
rough and free manner. The artist piles up fired works. He creates new spaces
through the process of including and compiling images that are like fragments
acquired from all everyday relationships. Revealed through this is the artist’s idea
that each moment we live in is a complex of ceaselessly circulating personal
emotions and experiences.
Otsuki Yosuke is an artist from Yokohama, Japan who runs the Otsuki Glass Studio.
The artist uses the transparency of glass to create spaces that can be seen but not
entered or touched. Traces of cutting imply past time while refined surfaces imply
present time. Two different times are represented in the same space.
Soungchuel Park’s work is exceedingly everyday and very continuous. The artist
focuses on successively creating sculpture as small elements. He creates plates by
pounding individual metal plates and the plate forms harmonize with one another to
constitute a sculpture. The artist’s work resembles an aggregate interconnected
individuals create. The act of ‘repetition’ penetrating that process is like a
repetition of daily life individuals face every day, as opposed to the mechanical
repetition of mass production.
Haiying Hu paints pointillist landscape
paintings using blue and white pigments. The artist’s landscape paintings formed by
simple shapes and restrained colors in limited spaces are landscapes of thought
rather than representations of landscapes. Just as even the same scenery will appear
different depending on the viewer’s perspective, the process of people viewing the
piece is a process of them admiring and feeling for themselves. The scenery the
artist included will lead many viewers in the same space to a process of profound
thinking and conversation.
Taekyu Jeong
Collaborating artist Taekyu Jeong
The artist forms a forest using 1,026 stringed-together bundles of 28 circles of
different sizes and colors completed by cutting Korean paper including mulberry
fiber and dyeing it so that variations in chromatic density and overlap
occur. Yoo creates a space where the moonlight seems to flow, thus offering the
viewer a space for meditation.
We are exhibiting craft works with utility, such as furniture, ceramics, and glassware
we encounter in daily life, and we composed the space so one could discover novel beauty
in things we use every day.
Artists’ works indeed born wearing ‘the artist’s sensibilities’ step out of the
antiquated mood crafts had and present contemporary sensibilities.
Also, in Familiar Objects, we present future crafts through works by Seonmin
Park, who up-cycles discarded glass bottles to create beautiful everyday craft objects,
and Jongdae Ryu, who offers digital crafts modernly reinterpreting traditional
elements using bio plastic and 3D printing.
We hope for this to become a space for thinking about crafts located close and
familiarly to our lives, reflecting on crafts filling our daily lives like dressing and
viewing
the mirror every day, and pondering ourselves as the ‘users,’ as viewers appreciate
works with colorful appeal and utility.
Sojung Pyeon presents crafts of contemporary sensibilities by combining the
traditional lacquering technique with the artist’s own unique techniques. The works,
which have gone through a delicate manual process, are characterized by the various
colors and textures held in simple forms. Under the theme of ‘new daily life created
through craft objects,’ the artist suggests everyday crafts completed through art to
all who love their space. Sojung Pyeon’s works, which possess both artistic and
practical qualities, explore crafts’ potential as unique objects.
(Art
Crafts as a practical art allowing one to experience convenience in daily life while
enjoying artistic value has created the flow of ‘art furniture.’ Jongdae Ryu seeks
to induce the different experience of daily life becoming an artistic backdrop
through art furniture. Like the D-SOBAN series, in which the artist conjoined
eco-friendly plastic that went through 3D printing with a traditional lacquer
finish, the combination of traditional furniture-making methods and the digital
fabrication technology of 3D printing are manifested as an element of surprise
inspiring the artist.
As the title suggests, Gyutae Kim’s Ugly Pot, created with ancient pottery as
the motif, has engobe running down the surface of the finger-marked body clay in
a seemingly embellished but actually unadorned fashion. The artist explores the
original within hyper-connected society, in which the boundaries of virtuality
will become vague, and he considers what meaning the artist’s act of molding
clay in an era when all objects can be replaced with digital information will
have. The message about whether the series of the artist’s manual actions will
remain valid in an era when clay’s texture, forms, and even colors could be
coded and printed includes the artist’s will toward the original’s uniqueness.
SOSOYOUNG reinterprets her personal story from a modern perspective through the
traditional academic achievement celebration, which holds our ancestors’ academic
passion and auspicious symbolism, and she expresses the story with the object of
patchwork cloth.
The pieces connected continuously and repetitively represent the
process itself of reaching completion, and it signifies that all objects are
connected to the user.
The continuous connection of small pieces implies the
infinity of art-making.

Seonmin Park’s Re: Bottle project is the result of an exploration of value.
What
have we been placing value on and where must we assign value as we live? How long
are resources necessary for human life actually being valuably used at our side? The
artist ponders two extreme perspectives toward objects, valuelessness and
pricelessness. The process of discovering new value that was hidden inside objects
is connected to the scientific principle of the value of all human activities
returning to nature’s cycle.
Yeoncheol Choi presents origami-like works through curvilinear
folding without ‘soldering’ or ‘welding,’ which come to mind when thinking of solid
metal. One can feel a characteristic sense of rhythm in the pieces, in which curves
using radially symmetrical repetitive arrangements are created with consideration to
precisely calculated ratios, contrast, distortion, balance, and density.
Our rooms, in which we sit in a chair, pick up silverware to eat, or turn off the lights
to finish the day, are all the combined products of the wisdom of many craftspeople
amassed through time.
Crafts connect us to the past, populate the present, and point toward the future.
They fill our ordinary days with extraordinary harmony.

Daeyong Jo, a National Intangible Cultural Heritage no. 114 blind-maker, is an artisan who
comes from a family of blind-weavers in Tong-yeong. Tens of thousands of touches and
hundreds of days are required in the process that begins with thinly stripping bamboo and
ends with inserting delicate patterns to complete each blind. Jo’s time and efforts poured
in to cherish and restore a tradition and pass it along to the next generation is wholly
revealed in his works. The dream of the master who dedicated his entire life to the
Tong-yeong blind is to authentically restore the spirit blinds in all 42 royal tombs in
South Korea.
Using mother-of-pearl as her main material, Jian Yoo delivers mother-of-pearl shades through
various techniques and colors. Based on the philosophy that new inspiration rooted in the
existing reaches creation, she makes work recording in a contemporary language beauty
imbuing tradition and history. Holding the brilliant beauty characteristic of
mother-of-pearl in objects developed through a present perspective, the works assign new
meaning and value through the intervention, transformation, and transition of materials
while valuing the subject’s originality.
Light revealed in Jungmo Kwon’s works possess the realm of countless shades of difference.
The light produces diverse images depending on the combined materials. The artist studies
how light is transmitted, reflected, refracted, and spread as it encounters each material.
Kwon reveals the realms of countless shades and captures fine chromatic changes in light
according to the temperature. Through such research, he seeks to reach results holding
sculptural qualities as objects while simultaneously pursuing comfortable illumination that
does not agitate the user’s eyes.

Paper umbrella master Gyusang Yun, Jeonbuk Intangible Cultural Heritage no. 45, strives to
preserve and promote the paper umbrella, a traditional umbrella. Requiring the artisan’s
touch in everything from the crafting tools, bamboo ribs, oiled Korean paper, and umbrella
tip, the paper umbrella is full of the craft artist’s passion and devotion for the beauty of
paper umbrellas blossoming like flowers. The artist has recently been creating works of
contemporary sensibilities that could be used in interiors.
Youngho Park’s works begin from a study of memory and forgetting. Memory is inevitably
premised on forgetting, and people repeat recording to prevent loss. The artist gives form
to a drop of ink in a giant lake of memory, memories that appear gone but have only become
faint by being diluted with water, and the flow of glass repeating running and stopping
depending on the temperature, as an endless circulation structure.

explores the point in nature where people feel comfort and solace, and he includes the
individual’s emotions and experiences in nature in his works. Nature, reinterpreted via the
artist’s own language, intends the transfer of new emotions derived from natural elements to
the works’ users.
Brass artisanry of the past was a broad and important field producing not just furniture
ornaments but also various utensils covering life in general. When the traditional lineage
was nearing exhaustion since the tumultuous early 20th century, National Intangible Cultural
Heritage no. 64 brass artisan Moonyeol Park was true to his pen name of Shim-kyeong (心耕,
“plowing the mind”) and has been quietly continuing his work while plowing his mental field.
Consistent with the artist’s belief that the sensibilities must be modern even if the
techniques adhere to tradition, Moonyeol Park’s works display a refined beauty in which
tradition and modernity meet.
